Drozda has a wonderful understanding of proportions and an eye for what is called Fair Curves - curves that look right and blend together flawlessly. When they're all put together they form a pleasing whole. The underlying coherent flow and the relationship of the size of the parts isn't easy to put your finger on. WHY does this piece look so damn nice? The left side of this illustration identifies the TWELVE curves which make up this piece. Could YOU see them - all?
What about the proportions? The #.## dimensions in the illustration were measured of an aribitrarily sized image brought into a CAD program and merely used to calculate proportions - with everthing's proportions based on the maximum diameter of the piece. The actual piece is about half this size.
As you can see, there's a LOT that goes into this piece and that's not obvious just looking at the piece, or a photo of the piece. When you REALLY study a piece you may begin to discover some underlying principles you can use in one of your future turnings. Some of those underlying principles are in the illustration. If you study it some more you'll probably discover some others.
Interesting yes?
