"Birth of a Fish"

This piece was done as an entry to the president's challenge at our last picnic.

The egg is a glue up of 7 pieces of mangrove, turned and hollowed as a box.
The egg was then stained with a dark red and an ebony stain, then finished with 10 coats of tung oil finish.
The sandy base, as well as the small piece inside the egg, was turned from a piece of curly maple, finished with 50/50 lacquer. The walnut base was also turned and finished with lacquer.

The fish was carved from a glue-up of yellow cedar and mahogany - the fish eyes are turned rosewood.
A couple pieces of fresh-water black coral finish it off.
This piece won the president's challenge, and also best of show.
It stands about 8 inches tall.
